12th Annual International Coral Reef Symposium Kicks Off in Cairns
ICRS. Google that and you will see information about the International Cartilage Repair Society and the International Christian Retail Show. I’m sure the crowd at both of those is a hoot, but the one we are talking about is the International Coral Reef Symposium. This event has occurred every 4 years since 1969 and includes a group of the world’s leading marine scientists, conservationists, economists, and educators. Various cities around the world have hosted this event over the years including Miami and Manilla. This year over 2500 of the above members from over 80 countries will be meeting July 9-13 in Cairns, Australia, a town in northeastern Australia at the center of the Great Barrier Reef. The goal of the symposium is to share the latest information on coral reefs and marine environments through a series of breakout sessions that will be held throughout the week.
2012 International Coral Reef Symposium Topics
This year, the conferences sessions will be covering many topics including marine environments, organisms, disease, and climatic changes. The obvious focus being on the changes that have been observed in the last century and how those changes are and will continue to affect the worlds oceans and coral reefs. A full list of the weeks’ agenda can be found here. We will keep our ears out later in the week to see what information comes out of this event and what impact it may have on the coral reef world at large.
