2016 MACNA in San Diego, Sept. 9th-11th
by Kayla Hoffer
September 9th through September 11th, the San Diego Marine Aquarium Foundation (SDMAF) – a non-profit organization that, through educational outreach, supports the local aquarium hobby, fosters new marine aquarium hobbyists, and furthers the advancement of captive bred marine ornamentals — will be hosting the 2016 Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA). It will take place at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center.
Widely considered the top conference and trade show in the marine aquarium industry, MACNA garners worldwide attention. People come to see the latest products by the marine aquarium industry’s top manufacturers as well as to mingle with the great minds found in the marine aquarium hobby. This will not only be the 27th MACNA, but will also be the event’s first time in Southern California since 1998, as well as the first time ever in San Diego.
There will be a number of speakers as well as workshops and prize drawings. While the precise schedule has yet to be posted on the official MACNA website (macnaconference.org/2016), you can still take a look to see how long each event lasts. Plus you can register for the event, figure out what hotels you could stay at and restaurants to go to if you’re not from the area, find out more about the venue itself, and asks any questions about the event that you can’t find the answers to.
It is important to note that MACNA is a registered trademark of the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA), which, much like the SDMAF, is a non-profit organization of marine aquarium clubs and hobbyists with goals to:
- Educate its members,
- Assist the formation and promotion of marine aquarium clubs while also making sure there is a sustainable future for the marine environment,
- Support the elimination of harmful collection and transportation of marine organisms through education, assistance, and encouragement,
- Encourage the ethical growth of the marine aquarium hobby and support captive breeding efforts.
MACNA helps these goals because, not only is it educational, it is also a great way to spread the importance of such organizations as MASNA and SDMAF. The sponsors – Triton GmbH, Instant Ocean, CoralVue, Neptune Systems, Two Little Fishies, Reef Nutrition, Rod’s Food, JBJ, eShopps, and San Francisco Bay Brand – not to mention the speakers and organizers, are aware of the importance of MACNA and events of its kind. And no doubt they would all love for this MACNA, and like events, to continue to grow in success and help spread its message further – the importance of marine life not only in our aquariums (commercial and hobby), but the importance of marine life in the world.
So if anyone happens to be in the San Diego area from September 9th through the 11th – or even if they don’t live close by – they should try to stop by the 2016 Marine Aquarium Conference of North America. You’re bound to learn and have fun whether you’re a marine aquarium enthusiast or not. And who knows – maybe this even will turn you into one!
