Plans are underway for the first underwater Ecovillage!
Have you ever dreamed of living underwater? As a child, I watched The Little Mermaid wishing I could live “under the sea”. Now this is soon to become a possibility!
We all know that majority of the earth’s surface is water. However, we have chosen to live on land, do to our inability to breathe underwater. Well a Belgian man, an architect, is making plans to change that. Vincent Callebaut wants to create the very first underwater ecovillage. He has named this project “Aequorea”. This project is to create an entire village that is under the surface. It is to be self-sustaining village of skyscrapers that have a design to resemble a jellyfish.
The plans for this underwater village is going to house up to 20,000 people. If all goes well.
The materials to construct the buildings will be made from recycled plastics and anything that can be found on land for the most part. The water surrounding the people that would live there would be their drinking water after it was treated. Light would be through bioluminescence, another benefit would be microalgae that would be used to recycle organic waste.
The building will be made so that they can withstand whirlpools and other natural disasters. It is to be constructed to handle the strain of the waters and pressure.
There are still a lot of bugs to be worked out for this project to become a reality, but this underwater village will one day happen. People have been testing living underwater base, the Aquarius Reef Base that is off of the coast of the Florida Keys!
There are also several attractions that are underwater, like the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant that is located in the Conrad Hilton. This is in the Maldives. There is also a underwater hotel in construction in Dubai. It is said to have an incredible view of the coral reefs that would be incredible sight when you wake in the morning I am sure.
