Petco to acquire Drs. Foster and Smith ( including Live Aquaria)

Shortly after the workday on Wednesday ended, the news broke that Petco, one of the nations leading pet retailers had bought the Rhinelander based Drs. Foster and Smith.  As is standard procedure, both Petco and DFS announced that the move would be “business as usual”  with both companies looking to grow their operations, but just what the future plans will be for this pet mega merger will remain to be seen.

Relevant to many of us reef hobbyists is what will happen to Drs. Foster and Smith’s Live Aquaria arm which was part of the acquisition.  Over the years, Live Aquaria has been a stand out reseller of quality live fish and coral with an emphasis on healthy and sustainbly grown specimens.  What now that they have been bought by a retail giant that has over 1300 locations in the US, Puerto Rico, and Mexico?  Will we see a push for profits derail the quality Live Aquaria has become known for over the years?  Will Petco use Live Aquaria’s expertise in coral and fish care to better educate its retail employees on how to maintain healthier fish in their stores?  Could this threaten your local fish store if they get it right?   All these are valid questions that we will have to see play out in the next year and beyond as the acquisition gets inked and the management teams begin to work out their strategy.

Drs. Foster and Smith

Over the years, Petco’s business has evolved from mainly supplies driven into the realm of services including both veterinary and grooming offerings that are done right in store. They also operate about 100 smaller boutique pet shops that bear the name “Unleashed by Petco”  and 10 Pooch Hotel destinations for pet daycare, boarding and spa services.   They have also done a great job in finding homes for pets to the tune of 400,000 annually.

For their part, Petco CEO Jim Myers was quoted as saying  “”This move underscores our commitment to nurturing the complete health and well-being of animals and further allows Petco to meet the diverse and expansive needs of pet parents”. “As pet lovers first and foremost, our values are perfectly aligned with Drs. Foster and Smith, and we’re confident this new addition to our business will help us continue to offer the very best in products and services to pets and pet parents.”

Time will tell what this acquisition turns into and hopefully Petco will continue its pet stewardship with Dr’s Foster and Smith’s many divisions and we will certainly keep an eye out for any updates.
